Construction & Building Materials

The construction industry is the second largest industry in India after agriculture. It accounts for about 11% of India’s GDP. It makes significant contribution to the national economy and provides employment to large number of people.Construction constitutes 40% to 50% of India's capital expenditure on projects in various sectors such as highways, roads, railways, energy, airports, irrigation etc. There are mainly three segments in the construction industry like real estate construction which includes residential and commercial construction; infrastructure building which includes roads, railways, power etc; and industrial construction that consists of oil and gas refineries, pipelines, textiles etc.Building material is any material which is used for a construction purpose. Many naturally occurring substances, such as clay, sand, wood and rocks, even twigs and leaves have been used to construct buildings. Apart from naturally occurring materials, many man-made products are in use.

The feasibility of infrastructure projects in ports, roads, airports and railways with private-sector majority ownership is already evident. The government also expects a substantial increase in the share of private sector investments in infrastructure from 19 per cent in the Tenth Plan to around 30 per cent in the Eleventh Plan. The biggest increase in private participation is expected in roads (from 5 per cent to 36), ports (47 per cent to 74 per cent) and railways (less than 1 per cent to 20 per cent). The Planning Commission estimates that the remaining infrastructure investments will be funded by the central and state government. According to a study by ASSOCHAM, the burgeoning Indian construction industry, currently worth $70 billion, will rise to US$120 billion by 2010.

The Commonwealth Games - 2010 in New Delhi have thrown mega opportunities for Building Material Companies, Construction Equipments & Technologies companies. The Govt. of India has permitted FDI up to 100% for development of integrated townships in India last year. India is now the second most favored destination for FDI, behind China. A large and growing middle class population of more than 300 million people, a changing life style, better cost of living etc is growth drivers for this sector.

The Indian construction industry, an integral part of the economyand a conduit for a substantial part of its development investment, is poised for growth on account of industrialization, urbanization, economic development and people's rising expectations for improved quality of living in the coming years.

GLASS SHEET (AUTOMATIC PLANT)

Glass is one of the man’s most valuable and versatile materials. About 700 different compositions are in thousands use. Glass is formed from those elements such as silicon, boron, phosphorous and arsenic that can be converted into glass when combined with oxygen, sulphur, tellurium or selenium. Common glasses contains about 70% SiO2. The glass industry represents a number of definable product segments like flat glass including float glass, glass containers and hollow ware, vacuum glass, domestic and industrial glass crystal glass, fibre glass, glass wool, T.V. picture tube glass shells and laboratory glass. It is used as a raw material for the manufacturing of safety glass, which is a very consumable product now a days and its use is increasing day by day. It is expected that the demand of sheet glass will increase tremendously. The safety glass has also export market and this factor also indicates its demand in future. New entrepreneurs can venture in to this field.

FUEL BRICKS FROM GROUND NUTS, SOYABEAN HULLS AND JUTE

Fuel bricks from the different raw materials now a days are very popular for the resources of renewable energy. There is great efforts have been taken by the Government to promote waste utilization from the different sources to convert into energy. In India jute, soyabean hull and groundnut waste is available in plenty, which can be utilize for the production of fuel bricks. These bricks can be used in boilers, furnace and in houses as a source of fuel. There is a good scope for this project. It can be started on small scale basis. So new entrepreneurs can venture in to this field.

Aluminium Cladding (Construction)

Aluminum wrought products are those aluminium products that have been subjected to plastic deformation by hot working and cold working process. These are divided basically into five major categories. These are Flat rolled products, Rod bar and wire, tubular products, shapes, forgings. The cladding of Alclad products electrochemically protect the core at exposed edges and at abraded or corroded areas. The most widely used Alclad products are sheet and plate, although wire, tube and other forms also produced. The percentage of cladding thickness is determined principally by the thickness of the finished part. There is very good demand of aluminium cladding product. Aluminium matrix composites have been first developed to meet very high performance defence and aerospace needs. Alca through its Duralcan subsidiary established a 25 million pound per year production capability for particulate reinforced aluminium composites. It will be profitable for the new entrants to invest in this project.

Asbestos Cement Corrugated Sheet

The asbestos sheet was first manufactured in 1914 in Japan. Since then improvement have been repeatedly made in the quality, shape and manufacturing process of asbestos sheet. Now the industry has grown up to produce 30 million sheets in a year. It is a non-inflammable material. It has water resisting qualities with less expansion or construction (1/10-1/20) of that of wood materials. It has super sound proof property and adequately prevents heat. It keeps out ants and rats. It is also economical because all properties of the sheet are balanced. Asbestos cement sheets witnessed a rapid growth in production. The production of AC products as whole has been increasing continuously. The company is planning to corner a significant share in the industrial segment, in which 50% of the fibre cement sheets are used. The sheets would be produced at its new production live established near Nasik at a cost of 600 mm. There is a good scope for new entrants.

CEMENT WATER PROOFING COMPOUND

Water resistance or proofing is an important factor in health and comfort of building occupants. Water proof construction implies the use of a membrance or a film that provides a barrier and covers all surface pores or capillaries. Cement water proofing compounds or water repellant agents are widely used in civil construction works. They are used in the masonary works like dams etc., in the godowns, basements and storage tanks. Among the various varieties of cement, the most commonly used in India is the ordinary portland cement, which is popularly known as gray cement. The largest share in the total consumption of cement is of ordinary portland cement, accounting for more than 70%. OPC is manufactured by grinding clinker with a small quantity of gypsum. It is used in mass and reinforced concrete, and all types of general concrete constructions. There is a good scope for new entrants.

FIRE CLAY BRICKS

Natural fireclays were the raw materials for the first refractories. Their usefulness in this respect is founded on the high proportion of clay minerals and other alumino silicates. Their properties vary in respect of chemical composition, refractoriness, plasticity, drying and firing shrinkages and other contraction, so that it is normal practice to use several clays mixed together for only particular product. Fire clay brick is used for dry heat furnaces, gas retorts and settings, gas producers, annealing furnaces, reheating furnaces, boiler settings, coke ovens etc. There is demand growth 3% per/annum. It is totally depend upon the industrial growth rate. Now in India there is 7.5% industrial growth rate. It can be predicted that there is fair scope for new manufacturers. They produce it with the normal brick, will be much more successful.
