It is now mandatory in many countries for paper-based packaging to be manufactured wholly or partially composed of recycled material. Uses and Applications Card board, grey board, straw board and other variety of boards are used for various packing processes for packing and protecting innumerable consumer and industrial goods. They find application in making cartons, boxes, packaging of hosiery, readymade garments, cosmetics, confectionary items, textiles etc. Further, grey board is an effective medium for packaging small and heavy items such as automobile parts, pharmaceutical products, plastic products, rubber components, glass items leather products, etc. Gray board has the advantage of light weight, easy to fabricate, easy for string, keeps the articles dust free and has the advantage of attractive printing, thus making the packed item move eye-appealing for sale. Grey board is used such as in exercise books, registers, flat files, card board, and in book binding etc. With the fast increase in industrial and commercial activity, the requirement of such items is increasing in many folds. Market Survey The world consumption of paper and paperboard is estimated at over 300 mn tonne a year. The Indian production is about 2 to 3% of the global total. The overall value of the market is estimated at Rs 250 bn. In volume terms, the segment is presently estimated at over 6.9 mn tonne. It is expected to expand to 9.2 mn tonne in 2010-11. . The Indian market is today growing at three times the rate of the global average. India's paper industry plans to invest USD 2.5 bn in the next two three years to add 2 mn tpa of paper and paper products production capacity. It will also help in improving cost-competitiveness. The paper production capacity is expected to rise to 8.5 to 9 mn tonne from the existing 7.5 mn tonne by 2010-11. The consumption of paper products is growing at a fast pace of around 6.5% and is expected to further go up in future. The industry now uses three sources of raw materials - recycled paper, wood and agro based, and waste.
