Agriculture & Horticulture: Project Opportunities in Himachal Pradesh

PROFILE

Agriculture Sector of Indian Economy is one of the most significant part of India. Agriculture is the only means of living for almost two-thirds of the employed class in India. About 65% of Indian population depends directly on agriculture and it accounts for around 22% of GDP. Agriculture derives its importance from the fact that it has vital supply and demand links with the manufacturing sector. The agriculture sector of India has occupied almost 43 percent of India's geographical area. Agriculture is still the only largest contributor to India's GDP even after a decline in the same in the agriculture share of India

RESOURCES

Out of the total geographical area of 55.673 lakh hectares, the area of operational holding is about 9.99 lakh hectares owned by 8.63 lakh farmers. The cultivated area in the State is only 10.4 per cent. About 80 per cent of the area is rain-fed. Rice, wheat and maize are important cereal crops of the State. Groundnut, soyabean and sunflower in kharif and rapeseed/mustard and toria are important oilseed crops in the rabi season. Urad, bean, moong, rajmah in kharif season and gram in rabi are the important pulse crops of the State. Maize is an important crop where surplus is available for processing.

The State has made significant progress in the development of horticulture. The topographical variations and altitudinal differences coupled with fertile, deep and well-drained soils favour the cultivation of temperate to sub tropical fruits. The main fruits under cultivation are apple, pear, peach, plum, apricot nut fruit, citrus fruits mango, litchi, guava and strawberry, etc. The region is also suitable for cultivation of ancillary horticultural produce like flowers, mushroom, honey, hops, tea, medicinal and aromatic plants, etc.

Agriculture, being the main occupation of the people of Himachal Pradesh, has an important role in the economy of the State. It provides direct employment to about 71 per cent of the main working population. Income from the agriculture and allied sector accounts for nearly 21.7 per cent of the total State Domestic Product.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Under the State Industrial Policy, numbers of incentives are available to the investors in food processing industry. Processing industries of ginger, potato and vegetables in valley areas have great investment scope. Besides, the temperate climate of the State is quite suitable for production of disease free seed. The Government is encouraging private sector participation for exploitation of vast seed production potential.

The National Policy on Agriculture seeks to actualise the vast untapped growth potential of Indian agriculture, strengthen rural infrastructure to support faster agricultural development, promote value addition, accelerate the growth of agro business, create employment in rural areas, secure a fair standard of living for the farmers and agricultural workers and their families, discourage migration to urban areas and face the challenges arising out of economic liberalization and globalisation. Over the next two decades, it aims to attain:

•        A growth rate in excess of 4 per cent per annum in the agriculture sector;

•        Growth that is based on efficient use of resources and conserves our soil, water and bio-diversity;

•        Growth with equity, i.e., growth which is widespread across regions and farmers;

•        Growth that is demand driven and caters to domestic markets and maximises benefits from exports of agricultural products in the face of the challenges arising from economic liberalization and globalisation;

•        Growth that is sustainable technologically, environmentally and economically.

The policy seeks to promote technically sound, economically viable, environmentally non-degrading, and socially acceptable use of country’s natural resources - land, water and genetic endowment to promote sustainable development of agriculture.

Waste management and recycling: Project Opportunities in Himachal Pradesh

PROFILE:

Rapid industrialization last few decades have led to the depletion of pollution of precious natural resources in India depletes and pollutes resources continuously. Further the rapid industrial developments have, also, led to the generation of huge quantities of hazardous wastes, which have further aggravated the environmental problems in the country by depleting and polluting natural resources. Therefore, rational and sustainable utilization of natural resources and its protection from toxic releases is vital for sustainable socio-economic development.

Hazardous waste management is a new concept for most of the Asian countries including India. The lack of technical and financial resources and the regulatory control for the management of hazardous wastes in the past had led to the unscientific disposal of hazardous wastes in India, which posed serious risks to human, animal and plant life.

RESOURCES:

After its success in banning plastic bags in the state, Himachal Pradesh government would be considering imposing ban on use of plastic disposables – cups, plates and glasses – to further strengthen the movement of protecting environment from non-biodegradable products. The State Government in a major move decided to employ a proven environment friendly technology, which uses recycled plastic in the bitumen mixture for roads and the outcome has been encouraging. Himachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board constructed a stretch of road of approximately 800 meters by using approx. 530 Kg of shredded plastic waste between Tutu-Jubbar Hatti airport in collaboration n with Public Works Department and Municipal Corporation. The waste plastic such as carry bags, disposable cups, and thermocoles, laminated plastics like pouches of chips, pan masala, aluminium foil, and packaging material used for biscuits, chocolates, milk, grocery etc was used in the road construction.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

National policy on waste management is set out in the October 1998 policy statement on waste management- Changing our Ways. It outlines the Government's policy objectives in relation to waste management, and suggests some key issues and considerations that must be addressed to achieve these objectives. The policy is firmly grounded in an internationally recognised hierarchy of options, namely prevention, minimisation, reuse/recycling, and the environmentally sustainable disposal of waste which cannot be prevented or recovered.

Vacuum Fried Snacks:Vacuum Fried Vegetable Chips (Sweet Potato, Beans and Beetroot)

Vegetable chips (also referred to as veggie chips) are chips or crisps that are prepared using vegetables. Vegetable chips may be fried, deep-fried, dehydrated, dried or baked. Many different root vegetables or leaf vegetables may be used. Vegetable chips may be eaten as a snack food, and may accompany other foods such as dips, or be used as a topping on dishes. In the United States, vegetable chips are often mass-produced, with many brands marketed to consumers. A potato chip or crisp is a thin slice of potato that has been deep fried, baked, kettle-cooked, or popped until crunchy. Potato chips are commonly served as a snack, side dish, or appetizer. The basic chips are cooked and salted; additional varieties are manufactured using various flavorings and ingredients including herbs, spices, cheeses, other natural flavors, artificial flavors and additives. More generally, crisps and chips include savory snack products made from not just potato, but also corn, tapioca, banana, or other cereals, and other root vegetables (e.g., sweet potato and carrot), and other fruits. Mixed Vegetable Chips (Sweet Potato, Pumpkin, Carrot, Taro and Green Beans), mixed fruit chips and beet root chips are processed by a vacuum frying method, the latest technology using the carefully selected raw materials from the best growing regions. Vegetables chips and fruit chips are 100% natural, Low fat, high nutrient, no preservative. Vacuum frying is a reasonably new technology which uses lower pressure and temperature rather than atmospheric deep-fat frying to improve the quality attributes of food products. Future Super parties might feature far healthier snacks if vacuum frying catches in. The technique, which is already used in Asia for items such as seaweed snacks, uses a lower temperature than conventionally fried foods. Vacuum frying reduces the amount of oil the food absorbs when compared to traditional frying methods; consequently, vacuum-fried foods retain more nutrients. Advantages of Vacuum Frying Vacuum fried products has low moisture content (<6%) and low water activity (aW<0.3) (Wongsuwan and Laosuksuwan, 2006). The absence of air during frying may inhibit oxidation including lipid oxidation, enzymatic browning; therefore, the color and nutrients of fried samples can be largely preserved (Tarzi et al., 2011). The products are crispy and retain original colour, taste and odour as of the natural foods. Vacuum frying have some advantages, first it can reduce oil content in the fried product. Second it can preserve natural color and flavors of the product depend to the low temperature and oxygen content during frying process and third it has less adverse effect on oil quality. Likewise vacuum frying is beneficial to some fruits or vegetables with intense odour such as durian. Vacuum fried durian is less objectionable and more convenient to carry when compared with fresh durian. Vacuum frying can be used to fry high sugar fruits and fresh vegetable in order to produce various kinds of snacks. Sugar is burnt before water is removed from the fruits. The products still have high moisture content. Market Outlook Potato chips and crisps are one of the most popular snack foods consumed worldwide. Over the years, the potato chips and crisp market has witnessed substantial growth, turning it into a multibillion-dollar market. However, the potato chips and crisps market is witnessing a shift in consumption patterns, a fluctuation in price of raw materials, and intense competition from substitutes. Manufacturers in the market are expected to meet success by developing newer products and quickly modifying ingredients of existing products to meet changes in consumer demand. The development of newer flavors to meet taste preferences of varied consumers is the key to surviving in the global potato chips and crisps market. The global potato chips market has been segmented by type and taste. By taste, the market is segregated into plain, salted, chili, and flavored chips. The global potato chips market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.3%, during the period 2017-2022, to reach a market value of USD 40.3 billion by 2022. The global potato chips market is also segmented by the distribution channel into super markets/hyper markets, convenience stores, independent retailers, and others. The supermarkets/hyper markets dominated in 2016, with more than 70% market share. Sweat Free and Antibacterial Socks

A sock is an item of clothing worn on the feet and often covering the ankle or some part of the calf. The foot is among the heaviest producers of sweat in the body, as it can produce over 0.12 l of perspiration per day; socks help to absorb this sweat and draw it to areas where air can evaporate the perspiration. Socks can be created from a wide variety of materials such as, cotton, wool, nylon, acrylic, polyester, olefins, (such as polypropylene), or spandex. To get an increased level of softness other materials that might be used during the process can be silk, bamboo, linen, cashmere, or mohair. ? Market Outlook Only 2 per cent of population in India wears socks and therefore, 98 per cent market is yet to be exploited. A sock is an item of clothing worn on the feet. The foot is among the heaviest producers of sweat in the body, as it is able to produce over a pint of perspiration per day. Socks help to absorb this sweat and draw it to areas where air can evaporate the perspiration. In cold environments, socks decrease the risk of frostbite. The global socks market was valued at USD 5.6 billion in 2014, expected to increase at a CAGR of 8.5% from 2015 to 2023. The overall socks market stood at a valuation of US$5.6 bn in 2014 and is expected to be worth US$11.6 bn by 2023. The study states that almost 70 per cent of men use socks every day. Socks are quickly growing beyond being a useful item to an apparel of fashion due to product developments, diversifications, and commercialization. Application specific customized socks are also opening new opportunities in the market. The global socks market was valued at USD 5.6 billion in last year, expected to increase at a CAGR of 8.5% in coming year. The lower share of the socks market in the backdrop of the apparel industry can be attributed to low volume and large percentage of the market being unorganized. However, taking the market growth rate into consideration, the socks market is projected to experience robust growth during the forecast period in contrast to the apparel industry in general. The rising demand for socks is primarily driven by improving fashion trends and the growing retail sector. Thus, due to demand it is a good project for entrepreneurs to invest. The second driver of the sports socks market is the affordable price of sports socks. While some luxury socks made of high-quality fabrics like rare animal wool can sell from $400 to $800 a pair, sports socks can be easily purchased for less than $50. This makes them far more likely to be used for a variety of reasons not related to sports. While their main purpose is for sports, rigorous activities or working out at the gym, sports socks can be matched with informal footwear in a casual setting. Nearly 70% of men wear socks every day and the growth of the men’s apparel industry should also provide a fillip to the overall socks and thereby sports socks market. Electric Motors

An electric motor is a device converting electrical energy into mechanical energy (usually a torque). This conversion is usually obtained through the generation of a magnetic field by means of a current flowing into one or more coils. An electric motor turns because of magnetic force exerted between a stationary electromagnet called the stator and a rotating electromagnet called the rotor. Different types of electric motors are distinguished by how electric current is supplied to the moving rotor. Tremendous technological advancements and the need for high efficiency motors are the two factors responsible for the growth of electric motors market in the past few years. Electric motors are widely used in motor vehicles, household appliances, material handling equipment, etc. An unmitigated increase in fuel prices coupled with the need to reduce air pollution has led to an increased preference for electric vehicles in several countries. This, in turn, is expected to upsurge the electric motor market. Premium efficiency motors are expected to gain traction in near future as they are low maintenance, consume low power and have many other unique features as well. Based on type, the AC electric motors are smaller, cheaper and light in weight and are widely used in HVAC equipment. Hence, AC electric motors will dominate the electrical motor market.Thus, due to demand it is a good project for entrepreneurs to invest.
