Methanol plays a crucial role in reducing environmentally-damaging effluent that is discharged by wastewater treatment facilities across the globe. The high levels of ammonia that accompany the waste processed by these facilities each day requires a bacterial degradation, which converts the ammonia into nitrate. Where does methanol come from? The typical feedstock used in the production of methanol is natural gas. Methanol also can be made from renewable resources such as wood, biomass crops, and methane gas from landfills or wastewater treatment plants. The production of methanol also offers a market for the use of remote natural gas, which is often flared, thus contributing significant greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions. In a typical methanol plant, production is carried out in two steps. The first step is to convert the feedstock natural gas into a synthesis gas stream consisting of CO, CO2, H2O and hydrogen. This is usually accomplished by the catalytic reforming of natural gas and steam. Partial oxidation is another possible route. The second step is to catalytically synthesize liquid methanol from the synthesis gas stream. Each of these steps can be carried out in a number of ways depending on the desired application The Indian import trend of methanol is growing at AAGR of 7.2%. The availability of natural gas in India is limited and there are no new methanol projects under implementation to cater to the increasing demand for methanol. India is a sewage rich country and has opportunity to make methanol from sewage water. Enerkem, a waste to energy company headquartered in Montreal, Canada, operates a commercial scale waste to methanol facility in Edmonton Canada. Enerkem converts mixed waste into pure synthesis gas, which is then converted to the production of biofuels and chemicals using proven well established and commercially available catalysts. Enerkem‘s clean technology platform is a 4 step thermo chemical process that consists of feedstock preparation, gasification, cleaning/conditioning of syngas and catalytic synthesis. Enerkem‘s Edmonton facility is capable of producing as much as 30,000 metric tonne of methanol per year. This will also help increase the City of Edmonton‘s waste diversion rate from 60 to 90%. The company may be open to implementing the technology at partner sites. Government initiatives to support such kind of projects in India will be highly appreciated and beneficial.
