| A syringe is a simple piston pump consisting of a plunger that fits tightly in a tube. The Indian domestic Medicare devices industry is expected to grow from Rs 60 bn to Rs 76.5 bn in four years. The overall market is estimated at Rs 150 bn. A major part of the demand is met through imports. Devices, such as catheters and stents represent nearly two fifth of the entire range of diagnostic devices and most critical as per international classification. The Government has decided to create separate quality guidelines for medical devices. Presently medical devices are treated like drugs and regulated by state drug regulators under the drug law Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Guidelines would make it mandatory for producers to get their products certified by notified bodies like ISO and BIS. Technological advances achieved by Medicare globally in the recent years have been phenomenal. The Indian scenario has not remained immune to these changes.
