Coleus Forskohlii Extract - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost And Revenue

Coleus Forskohlii grows wild on sun-exposed arid and semi-arid hill slopes of the Himalayas in Uttar Pradesh (India) were from Simla eastward to Sikkim and Bhutan, Deccan Plateau, Eastern Ghats, Eastern Plateau and rain shadow regions of the Western Ghats in India. It is mostly cultivated in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Karnataka. Coleus forskohlii is part of the mint family of plants and has long been cultivated in India, Thailand and parts of SE Asia as a spice and as a condiment for heart ailments and stomach cramps. The roots of the plant are a natural source of forskolin, the only plant-derived compound presently known to directly stimulate the enzyme adenylate cyclase, and subsequently cyclic cAMP. In Ayurvedic medicine Coleus species have been used to treat heart disease, convulsions, spasmodic pain and painful urination. It is widely used as a domestic mild medicine in South America among both urban and rural developments, sometimes confused with the native plant with similar properties but different uses, boldo. The herbal tea of Plectranthus barbatus is composed mainly by rosmarinic acid, but also by flavonoid glucuronides and diterpenoids. It showed interesting activities in vitro, such as antioxidant activity, acetylcholinesterase inhibition (related with the treatment of Alzheimer's disease) and inhibition of the growth of cariogenic bacteria. When administered to rats, the components of the herbal tea were found in the plasma and an inhibition of brain acetylcholinesterase was observed, suggesting that the plant extract may be useful in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. In India, there are about 20 well-recognized manufacturers of herbal drugs and 140 medium or small-scale manufacturers. In addition, thousands of vaidyas have their own miniature manufacturing facilities. About 1200 licensed small manufacturers in India are on record. The estimated current annual production of herbal drugs is around Rs.100 crores. The Indian manufacturers have to stress on various standardization processes to establish their products in the global markets. Standardization starting from production of quality materials, analysis of raw materials for authentification, foreign matter, organoleptic evaluation, microscopic examination, extractive values, chromatographic profiles, pesticides residue, heavy metal detection etc. is necessary for standardization of drugs. There is very wide scope and good market potential of products manufactured in this sector.
