| The role of agrochemicals in modern agriculture is continuously evolving, and their contribution to crop protection continues to increase. Chemical pesticides have played a major role in crop protection for the last five to seven decades. Cypermethrin is an insecticide in the synthetic pyrethroid family has become one of the most important insecticides in wide-scale use both indoors and outdoors. Synthetic pyrethroids are synthesized derivatives of naturally occurring pyrethrins, which are taken from pyrethrum, the oleoresin extract of dried chrysanthemum flowers (the term “pyrethrum” is often used as a generic term to describe either natural pyrethrins or synthetic pyrethroids). In a natural environment, they were chemically unstable and broke down rapidly upon exposure to air and sunlight. Beginning in the 1970s, synthetic pyrethroids came into the market for agricultural purposes as they were synthesized from petroleum derivatives. Natural pyrethrins products pose far less risks to mammals than Organophosphate, Carbamate insecticide chemicals but have no residual or long term control qualities. This combination of safety and no residual is great for fogging warehouses and restaurants, using in bug bombs and animal control products (flea shampoos, flea sprays) but no residual affect is desired for most home pest control problems. Over the last few decades, chemists have been able to improve on Mother Nature’s pyrethrins insecticides in better, odorless and more stable pesticide formulations. These products are available in liquid concentrates, wettable powders, insecticide dusts, granulated insecticides. Some examples of synthetic pyrethroid insecticides include cypermethrin, permethrin, deltamethrin, bifenthrin, cyfluthrin etc. Pyrethroids may be mixed with piperonyl butoxide, a synergist, which enhances the effect of the active ingredient. Cypermethrin has become one of the most important insecticides in wide-scale use. Cypermethrin is a synthetic composite pyrethroids chemical similar to the pyrethrins in pyrethrum extract (which comes from the chrysanthemum plant). Pyrethroids, including cypermethrin were designed to be effective longer than pyrethrins. Cypermethrin is not a plant systemic, it is readily degraded on soil or plants but has good residual activity on inert surfaces. Cypermethrin is a mixture of several closely related chemicals (known as 'stereo isomers'), rather than being a single chemical. The agrochemicals industry is made up of insecticides (74%), herbicides (20%) and fungicides (6%). The total installed annual capacity of 43 technical grades of pesticides and insecticides in India is estimated at 148,000 tonnes of which only four grades (Mancozab 20,700 tonnes, Monocrotophos 14,000 tonnes, Malathion 11,800 tonnes and Endo-sulphan 10,100 tonnes) account for over 38% of the aggregate installed capacities. India is one among the most dynamic generic pesticides manufacturing countries. And yet, India's own average consumption of pesticides is low, below 500 gms per ha. Crop protection has assumed special importance since the food grains demand in the country is supposed to reach an estimated 343 million tonnes by 2020.
