Pitaya fruit, pitahaya fruit or commonly known as Dragon Fruit is among the most nutritious and wonderful exotic fruits. It is a favorite to many, particularly people of Asian origin.

Yellow colour fruit with white colour flesh.

Dragon Fruit (Hylocereus undatus) production is gaining more and more recognition as an important crop. It is a nutritious fruit with a variety of uses. The fruit pulp can be eaten fresh and can be made into various valuable processed products. The fruit possesses medicinal properties: it is known to prevent colon cancer and diabetes, neutralizes toxic substances such as heavy metals, reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure. It is also reported to control high sugar levels, prevent cancer and bleeding, and promote dental health. Dragon fruit helps improve digestion and reduce fat. It helps maintain the health of eyes.

A Dragon Fruit Production Enterprise has been demonstrated to provide viable source of food, income and employment to growers locally and abroad. It could be an asset to backyard growers as well as entrepreneurs of medium and large scale plantations. The marketability of Dragon Fruit in the locality is expected to be very high because of limited number of commercial producers of the product.

Dragon Fruit farming is native to tropical countries. It is one of the fastest growing vine, which needs vertical support to grow. A very few farmers in the Sates of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka & Tamil Nadu have taken up Dragon Fruit cultivation in India. The total All India area of Dragon Fruit cultivation maybe less than 100 acres. The awareness and demand for this fruit is huge in India mainly for its taste, nutritional and medicinal properties. This fruit is packed with excellent health benefits, has good demand in local as well as international market. Hence one can get good returns in dragon fruit cultivation.

India is a tropical country with moderate climate all round the year. Dragon fruit adapts well to tropical climates. There is a huge demand for dragon fruit in the market. It is used by the juice vendors near IT companies. So if you start cultivating you can earn a good amount by supplying your yield to the juice vendors or if you have a potential to value add the fruit you can make a brand of yours and start selling the dragon fruit juice directly.
