Food packaging is essentially packaging for food. It requires protection, tampering resistance, and special physical, chemical, or biological needs. It also shows the product that is labeled to show any nutrition information on the food being consumed.” Physical protection from shock, vibration etc. is necessary for the food product enclosed in the package. Other requirements include a ‘barrier’ to prevent the food product being contaminated by dust, water vapor etc. Desiccants are often used to prevent oxygen contamination.Apart from the huge value addition and employment involved in these activities, packaging has served the Indianeconomy by helping preservation of the quality and lengthening the shelf life of innumerable products.

The Indian food industry is poised for huge growth, increasing its contribution to world food trade every year. In India, the food sector has emerged as a high-growth and high-profit sector due to its immense potential for value addition, particularly within the food processing industry.

The main categories of packaged food are:

·         Bakery,

·         Canned/dried and frozen processed food,

·         Meal substitute food products,

·         Dairy products,

·         Ready to eat frozen foods,

·         Processed meat etc.

The packaging industry’s growth has led to greater specialisation and sophistication from the point of view of health (in the case of packaged foods and medicines) and environment friendliness of packing material. The demands on the packaging industry are challenging, given the increasing environmental awareness among communities. As nations such as China, India, Brazil and Russia become wealthier, they are changing their eating habits. In particular, they are buying more packaged foods.

According to FICCI, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, marine and fish, meat and poultry, breads and bakery, confectionery and packaged foods are the key industry segments which offer tremendous growth potential and investment opportunities.

The major factor among others is Convenience without compromising on taste as packaged food works well fora busy person who wants to eat a balanced meal or for a person who doesn't like to cook because there'svirtually no cooking involved.Rising disposable incomes and the on-going urbanization of India's population are set to drive the packagedfood market in India.  The industry is mainly unorganized with 75% of the processing units belonging to the unorganized category, the organized category though small, is growing fast.  Organized retail and boom in e-commerce, which offer huge potential for future growth of retailing, is giving a boost to the Food packaging sector.

The packaged food industry is the fifth-largest sector in India. The Indian packaged food industry is worth US$39.7 billion and is expected to reach US$65.41 billion by 2020. With a sales volume of 30 million tonne in 2013, India is one of the largest markets for packaged food in the world.
